Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIRI) is a flagship Public-Private Partnership Programme of BIRAC, a Not-for-Profit, Public Sector Undertaking set up by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India to promote and nurture innovative research in Biotech Enterprises.
Ø Support for innovation research in Biotech companies including Start ups and Small & Medium Enterprises
Ø Financial support for early stage & proof-of-concept for innovations based on valid hypothesis, R&D aimed at affordable product development, lab-scale technology refinement, validation of a technology at pilot scale, platform technologies/prototype development etc.
Ø Support is extended as a mix of grant-in-aid and loan.
Ø Collaborating public/private institutions/universities are eligible for grant-in-aid
Ø The proposals can be submitted
o solely by a Company incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 or Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) incorporated under the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008 or Joint Ventures either in the form of Company/ LLP
o by any of the above entities jointly with other private or public partner(s) (Universities or Institutes).
Ø Minimum 51% of the shares of the Company should be held by Indian Citizens.
Ø Minimum half of the persons who have subscribed their names to the LLP document as its Partners should be Indian citizens.
Ø The main industry applicant should have DSIR* recognized in-house R&D unit or patent granted or acquired, which will be used for the proposed project.
*(The companies who are in the process of obtaining DSIR recognition or intend to do so can also apply. However final decision on their applications will be subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria.)
