On June 2012, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) signed an umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on mission-directed research and build a Grand Challenges India which was launched on 20th March 2013, to support innovations in vaccines, drugs, agricultural products, and interventions related to malnutrition, family and child health.

The partnership along with U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched its third initiative ‘All Children Thriving’ which aims to dramatically change the health and development landscape in India.
